Ways to Get Rid of Carpenter Ants

So called because they prefer to bore wood to build their colonies, these ants are constantly multiplying and setting up more and more colonies next to their old ones. So once the first group of carpenter ants has established themselves, a number of them go out to build another colony and so on. The colonies are built outwards in many directions from the original one.

Damage to nature

Although we encounter carpenter ants in houses, they really prefer damp wood to dry wood. In the wild, they will be found inhabiting tree stumps and decaying trees in the forests. In such instances, they are following nature’s plan by hastening the destruction of dead pieces of wood. However, they may also decide to establish their colonies in perfectly healthy forests. In that case, carpenter ants may eventually kill the tree they reside in. If you find these ants in your garden, you should do something about exterminating them before they find their way into your house.

Carpenter ants can be easy to exterminate in the wild

Because carpenter ants are relatively easier to detect than termites, they are also easier to exterminate if you manage to find their nest. If you can stay up until midnight, which is the time they go out and forage for food, you can bait them with some honey and follow them back to their nest. The following morning, all you need do is to remove the debris around the nest and pour boiling water on it. You may or may not succeed in eliminating the carpenter ants depending on how deep the nest is. Whatever the case, it will be worth the try.

Carpenter ants in your house can be a problem

Around the house, they may settle in places that are frequently exposed to moisture such as the wooden wall behind leaky faucets. Carpenter ants may also be found in places like the basement where they can build their colonies in the floor, in furniture or in the void of walls. In most cases they will be found in decayed and moist wood. That is why it is important not to allow water to stand in any portion of the house where it can soak wood.

Incidentally, damp wood termites also live in wet wooden structures. The difference between them and carpenter ants is that wood bored by ants is worked cleanly through without the debris that drops from wood that termites have worked on. The tunnels may also be larger in termite colonies.

Evidently, you won’t be able to go about pouring hot water in the walls and floors of your house because water cools down too fast to be effective there. To discover the nest of the carpenter ants, you may have to remove walls. After that you can pour the water on the nest. Alternatively you could bore holes into the wall so that you can spray insecticide through them. This does not ensure that the spray will reach the inmost recesses of the nest or will exterminate the carpenter ants.
